Although the rare type and colors of the sample are interesting in their own right, one feature that makes 1952 Alaska license plates so visually appealing are the stylized serial dies. Irwin-Hodson used this die set on 1941-49 Oregon plates, then (after presumably letting them gather dust a couple years) brought them up north for one year only. I sometimes wonder why either state didn't keep them longer...
